The following information was taken from the BRCGS website on 30 May 2023. All auditors must work for a certification body, which may be on an employed or contracted basis. An independent auditor cannot issue a BRCGS audit certificate.

The certification body is responsible for ensuring that the auditor fulfils the specified competency requirements, is registered with BRCGS, and that skills and knowledge of all registered auditors are maintained.

Generally auditors must be able to demonstrate, through qualifications and work experience in the manufacturing sector they’re applying for, that they meet the criteria specified for each Standard. As a minimum:

• a degree or equivalent in a field relevant to the Standard;
• successful completion of a registered QMS Lead Auditor course or equivalent;
• successful completion of HACCP training based on the principles of Codex Alimentarius, of at least two days’ duration or the equivalent risk assessment training for non-food products;
• appropriate post-qualification work experience (a minimum of five years relevant experience in industry, usually in a manufacturing sector);
• completed BRCGS training in the specified Standard; and
• audit experience – generally a specified number of audits including those against the BRCGS Global Standards.

BRCGS is one of the most common GFSI standards used by food manufacturers and distributors in Australia. There are currently 28,000 sites certified to BRCGS across 130 countries. As a BRCGS auditor, expect to be working for one of the larger certification bodies and auditing food manufacturers. 

The following points will be covered in the class: 

• As a class, we will work through the BRCGS standard and explain the requirements and common audit trails
• Assess compliance to the requirements of the Standard and explain how compliance can be demonstrated to maintain food safety, quality, legality and authenticity
• Describe the scope of companies and products covered by the Standard
• Describe steps to conduct a BRCGS audit including the preparation, planning, and reporting of the audit
• Utilise and explain resource tools available for compliance and beneficial support from BRCGS

• Industry professionals who want to begin their consulting or auditing career and add BRCGS to their auditing scope. 

Participants must have:

• Current HACCP Principles and Applications Training or equivalent. The HACCP course must be at least 16 hours in length. 
• Completed Food Safety Lead Auditor course in last five years
